How much should I spend?

HiFi Stereo System
Marantz Reference Components System

While Hi-Fi systems can cost in excess of NZ$1.25M it is also possible to get started with a beautiful two channel amp, SACD player and speakers for as little as $5000.

The old rule of "you get what you pay for" is true in this industry but must be countered with "you pay for how well it's marketed"

There are several standards out there that are very marketed, many manufacturers need to be able to stick the badge their equipment to keep up with the opposition, for this honour the manufacturers must pay a royalty, the cost for which is carried by the consumer.

When selecting equipment you should pay more attention to how it makes you feel than how many badges and logos it has on it!
